One of the most important aspects of obstetrical care is to date, as precisely as possible, the beginning of pregnancy so that the estimated time of arrival ETA can be calculated sometimes referred to as the estimated date of confinement — EDC. And yet, even with all of the available technology, one of the puzzles of modern obstetrics, is that the obstetrician has not yet learned how to accurately date the beginning of a pregnancy. Pregnancy can be measured in two different ways. The most common and most often used in clinical obstetrics is the measurement of the gestational age of the pregnancy. The gestational age of the pregnancy is measured from the first day of the last menstrual period. In this way of dating the pregnancy, the pregnancy is 40 weeks in duration on average instead of the actual 38 weeks. In other words, it dates the pregnancy, on average, two weeks longer than it is.
Can your pregnancy scan give the wrong due date?
LONDON — A home digital pregnancy test is able to correctly estimate the likely week of conception, according to the results of a month, prospective observational study of 1, nonpregnant U. The results of the digital pregnancy test were compared with ultrasound measurements performed at approximately 12 weeks after the woman had her last menstrual period LMP. Johnson noted that this is the first home pregnancy test to provide an accurate and early assessment of pregnancy at the time when a woman first suspects that she might be pregnant.
It is also the first test to provide a digital readout, which is potentially simpler for women to understand than seeing a line in a window to indicate whether they are pregnant or not. Similar to other home pregnancy tests, the digital pregnancy test measures levels of human chorionic gonadotrophin hCG excreted in the urine.

Your Baby’s Growth – What the Scan Shows
Throughout my pregnancy , I’ve received two different due dates — one came from my very first ultrasound, when my baby was barely the size of a blueberry, the date that was then subsequently stamped on my record as “the” due date. But then there was a second date, the one that showed up on my next couple of ultrasound scans. This date was a few days earlier.
It’s also the date that I prefer, not only because I’m now 38 weeks pregnant and ready to get this baby out, but because it matched the date I’d calculated on my own using information I looked up.

Every pregnant woman wants to know her due date. But a due date calculated from last menstrual period with a due date calculator often doesn’t match the due date that is estimated by ultrasound also known as a sonogram. During an ultrasound, a technician spreads a warm gel over the lower part of the abdomen, and then presses a tool called a transducer against the belly to examine the fetus using sound waves.
An image of the fetus appears on an accompanying computer screen. While looking at this image, the technician takes some standard measurements from different angles and listens for a heartbeat. Sonograms are risk-free, and seeing your baby will likely be an enjoyable experience.
